An eq, short for equaliser, turns parts of the sound up or down by frequency: lows, mids, highs. It's how you give every part its own place. Your lead doesn't need the deep lows, so cutting them leaves that space for the kick and bass. Almost every part in a mix gets a low cut except those two.
