Quarters: one hat per beat, right on the kick. Eighths: two per beat, one on the kick and one exactly halfway to the next. Sixteenths: four per beat, a fast tick-tick-tick-tick. Listen to how the groove gets busier and faster-feeling while the tempo stays exactly the same.
