Kick, clap, hats. Every one of these is made by the engine, built from waves and noise as it plays. There's another way to get a sound: record it once, then play the recording back whenever you hit a pad or a key.
That's a sampler. A sample is just a recording, and a sampler is an instrument that plays recordings. Any sound can become an instrument this way: a drum, a voice, a door slam.
