A sample is a recording you play back as an instrument: a single drum hit, a vocal, a chord from an old record. A loop is a sample that repeats, usually a bar or two long. Hip hop was built on loops cut from funk and soul records, and house producers sample constantly.
sampling and permission
Using a few seconds of someone else's record still needs permission if you release it. Lots of producers record their own sounds or use sample packs that come cleared. The drums here were recorded for CCD School and are free to use.
