Reverb is the sound of a room: thousands of tiny reflections blurring into a tail. Echo, or delay, is a clear repeat of the sound. Dry sounds feel close, right in your ear. More reverb pushes them further back. Producers use that to give a mix depth: kick and bass up front and dry, pads and leads a little further back.
